About The District

Luwingu District , established in 1906, is one of the oldest districts in the Northern Province of Zambia. It lies approximately , 1000 km from Lusaka, the capital city, and shares boundaries with Kasama , Lunte, Mporokoso , Lupososhi, and Chilubi districts .

The district is predominantly a farming community is among the major producers of beans and maize in the region . Millet and Cassava are also widely cultivated and hold a significant cultural value among the local people .

Luwingu is governed under three traditional leadership:

1.Senior Chief Shimumbi

2.Chief Chipalo

3.Chief Tunagti

The area is endowed with notable tourist natural attractions ,including Lufubu Falls, scenic site shared between Lupososhi and Luwingu Districts . It is one of the most local spots for relaxation and recreation.

Luwingu District also hosts Isangano Game Reserve , located in Isangano Ward , which adds to its tourism potential. Recently , deposits of manganese have been discovered in various parts of the district , particularly, in the Chief Shimumbi area .

Culturally, the district is predominatly Bemba-speaking and falls under the traditional authority of paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta –Manga  II Sosala,based in Mwingwi District.
