The Luwingu Town Council’s Public Health Department has penalised 30 businesses for selling expired products to members of the public.
The Department of Health has also seized 2,000 assorted items, valued at K34, 000, following a routine inspection of trading premises in the Central Business District (CBD).
The enforcement action was carried out in accordance with the Public Health Act, Cap 295; the Food Safety Act of 2019; and the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011.
150 trading premises were inspected during the exercise, of which 55 stores were found to be non-compliant.
The operation was conducted in Bama, Saili, Chola, Mitanto, Kamumango, Chelston, and the Main Market areas.
The confiscated items include groceries, beverages, meat and fish products, alcoholic drinks, and paint products. The items were later destroyed at the Council dumpsite.
The Council wishes to appeal to all shop owners to consistently check the quality and expiry dates of products before offering them for sale to the public. Ensuring compliance with food safety standards is critical to protecting the health and well-being of consumers.
The local authority reaffirms its commitment to upholding food safety standards and safeguarding public health in the district.
