Residents of Luwingu District have praised the Road Development Agency (RDA) for establishing a first ever modern bridge on Chasasha river, linking Luwingu district to Kasama via Chief Shimumbi Chiefdom .
The Chasasha bridge which is a World Bank Funded project was constructed by China Jiangxi at an estimated cost of k13 million.
Francis Chikuka of Chilubi District , said the poor state of the bridge on the Chasasha river caused fatalities and most people ended up losing their lives while crossing the bridge , he said the construction of the bridge will enhance safety for the residents and reduce travel time for travelers in Chilubi ,Shimumbi and surrounding areas. The move will prevent motorists from the said areas to pass through Luwingu township in order to Kasama.
Another resident named James Kabwe of Chief Shimumbi area ,expressed delight at the construction of the facility, stating that the modern bridge will significantly help government in delivering farming inputs to farmers in the area, adding that the infrastructure will give easy passage to transporters to ferry their produce to markets such as the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) and others.
And Luwingu Council Chairperson Roderick Mulenga has visited the newly constructed 52 metre crossing point to appreciate the works.
Mr. Mulenga thanked government for responding to the cries of the residents of Luwingu Kasama and Chilubi districts, by constructing a modern bridge, stressing that the development underscored a significant milestone for community members in the three districts.
Mr. Mulenga said since 2021, he together with other stakeholders had made constant appeals to RDA to consider constructing a bridge on the Chasasha and that he was elated to see the project coming to fruition.
The Council Chairperson further expressed happiness at the architectural design of the bridge which also has a provision for a foot path.
